Gerald de Haan

The lab of Gerald de Haan studies how blood cell production is ensured during the aging process. Blood-forming, hematopoietic, stem cells that are located in the bone marrow are responsible for producing all the various blood cells in our body. During aging blood cells become less functional. This results in a deficit of certain blood cell types, or in uncontrolled cell growth, leading to leukemia. Our lab is interested to identify the molecular mechanisms that contribute to age-dependent stem cell malfunctioning, with the aim to improve stem cell potential.
