In brain, there are several tumor types that appear similar, yet have distinct ages-of-onset and mutational spectra. An explanation for this is that the original cells transforming into these tumors are related but not identical, for instance as they are separated in time. The research group of Sophia Bruggeman studies the nature of these age-related differences in tumor cells-of-origin, and investigates how they influence tumor formation and can be exploited for tumor treatment.
